What sophomore year is actually for

Q1 · Commit — Decide what you'll still be doing as a senior, and act like it starting now.

Q2 · Add rigour — The courses that open junior year get chosen — and prepared for — this quarter.

Q3 · Go outside school — Something beyond your own building: a competition, a program, a person who isn't your teacher.

Q4 · Start testing — The PSAT, and an honest plan for the real test rather than a panic in junior spring.

Summer · Scale it — The summer with the most room in it. This is the one that changes the shape of an application.

Sophomore year is where the honest version of the extracurricular question gets answered. A student who has held two commitments since ninth grade now has something that reads as a person. A student who joined six things last term has a list, and a list is not interesting to anyone.

This is not about impressing anyone. Depth is what produces the things that matter later — a role rather than a membership, a teacher who knows your work well enough to write about it specifically, something you have done long enough to have an opinion about.

Course selection for junior year happens in sophomore spring, and junior year is the transcript admissions readers look at hardest. That means the hardest schedule you will ever take is chosen by a fifteen-year-old in February, usually without anyone framing it that way.

Frame it that way. Be honest about which subjects are actually strong rather than which ones sound strongest, because a schedule that looks impressive on paper and produces a difficult junior year is the worst available outcome.
