What each part of the year is for

The planning part of senior year ends after third quarter. By then everything is submitted, and what is left is deciding — offers, aid packages, and choosing between them.
That is worth knowing in September, because senior autumn is genuinely dense and it helps to know it has an end. The apparatus of an application — early deadlines, recommendation letters, transcripts, financial aid forms — mostly lands in one twelve-week stretch.
Grades still count, and deciding is harder than it looks
Senior grades are not decorative. Offers are conditional on finishing the year, and a collapse after submission is one of the few things that can undo an acceptance. The bar is not perfection; it is not falling off a cliff.
And the final decision is a harder problem than most people expect. Comparing aid packages is genuinely difficult, the differences between them are frequently larger than the differences between the institutions, and the deadline to decide is real. Treat it as a decision that deserves work rather than a formality after the work is done.
